Coffee and Conversation this Sunday, June 7
Join us for our first Coffee and Conversation this Sunday from 9-10 a.m. in the Kramer Room. Christopher and Kathleen Gould will facilitate a discussion of Gabriel García Márquez’s haunting and thought-provoking short story, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings.
The story begins with the mysterious arrival of a frail old man with giant wings in a small village after a storm. What follows is a fascinating exploration of human nature, wonder, suffering, religion, cynicism, compassion, and the ways people respond to mystery when it unexpectedly appears in their midst. Like much of Márquez’s work, the story blends the ordinary and the miraculous in ways that invite deep reflection.
Participants are encouraged to read the short story beforehand if possible, though all are welcome whether you’ve read it or not. Come enjoy coffee, conversation, and thoughtful reflection together.
Children’s Chapel in Johnson Hall 10:15 a.m.
During Children’s Chapel, our children experience Godly Play—a Montessori-based approach to spiritual formation that invites them into the stories of our faith through wonder, imagination, and reflection.
It’s a gift to watch our children grow in faith in ways that are both grounded and imaginative, and then return to the table with the whole community.
We offer nursery care from 9-11:45.
Book Launch June 11
Fulfill Thy Ministry Three Episcopal Clergymen, Race and the Civil War Era by Loren B. Mead (the late father of Babs Wise) and J. Michael Martinez has just been published. It is the story of three South Carolina Episcopal priests, all white Confederate veterans who faced the realities of emancipation in different ways. How did they understand their ministry to Black congregants? How did the church respond? The attitudes they formed and the decisions they made have reverberations in the church and American society as a whole. Come hear from and meet the author of this important book. June 11th at 7 p.m. Johnson Hall, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1737 Hillandale Road, Durham, NC. A special presentation of Arts at St. Luke’s and NC Diocesan History and Archives.
Meal Train Ministry
Pastoral Care takes many forms. One is to be able to offer meals when our folks are in need of food to help them bridge a difficult or stressful time. It could be a return from a hospital visit; upon learning of some difficult news; upon the birth of a new family member and the like. Ann Riley is offering to manage this program. Please prayerfully consider adding your name to the email list for notification when this need arises. You can easily sign up in the Sprague Room. We don’t anticipate this will happen often but when it does, it is such a comfort for those in our community who need a little extra support. If you have questions, please reach out to Ann. Thank you so much.
Labyrinth Walk
Join our walk into Summer on Saturday, June 20, at 10:00. Note, we are starting this walk earlier in the day to get ahead of the heat. Hope to see you there!!
Parish Administrator Kaye Saunders is on vacation June 2-9. The parish office is closed for all administrative work on those days and will reopen June 10. Other staff may be available at times, but regular office hours will not be observed.
Summer Parish Office Hours
Beginning next Monday, June 15, the parish office will observe the following summer hours: Monday-Wednesday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The office will be closed on Thursdays, but Kaye will work from home and be available by phone and email. If you call the church office on Thursdays, your call will be forwarded to Kaye’s phone. Greg, David, and Monnie will be working and reachable by cell. Regular hours will resume the first week of September.
Transportation Ministry
This ministry offers transportation for members of our community in need of rides to doctor, dental, medical or surgical clinic appointments and other special needs in the Durham and Chapel Hill areas.
