Children and Youth programs have resumed. Masks are required, and social distancing will be observed as we follow the guidelines from the diocese. Godly Play for children 4yrs old-5th grade will meet at 9:30am in Johnson Hall. Youth group will meet following worship at 10:30 in the Gray Building. More details to follow. We will have one Ash Wednesday service, March 2, in the nave at noon. The imposition of ashes will be available for those who desire. DERC has received a generous donation from St. Stephen’s church for DERC’s second resettlement project. They will supply a few volunteers and have started collecting furnishings, but there is a lot of opportunity for more volunteers to get involved. We will need movers, house stagers, grocery shoppers as well as a team dedicated to helping a family uprooted by world events to find a home in Durham. Would you be willing to help? Please get in touch with Babs or Jim Wise. Do you know anyone who rents property? That is an immediate need for any resettlement efforts, both this new effort and one being organized by St Phillips must first have a property in order to be assigned a family. Please let Jim or Babs know if you might know of something. |

This quiet time will offer space and prompts to reflect on the season and its resonance with our current lives. More details to come. March Newsletter We will resume a monthly newsletter starting in March. The deadline will be the third Sunday of February – February 20. Please send any articles or announcements to Kathy by that date. Annual Meeting rescheduled. St. Luke’s Annual meeting will be held in person on March 20th, immediately following the service. | Full Article LEAP in 2022 LEAP is starting 2022 filled with renewed energy and resolve to ride out this virus and the challenges it continues to create! Preschool We have just over sixty children enrolled in our preschool programs at St. Luke’s (Nuestra Escuelita) and the DCI/LEAP Academy. Our first three weeks of January were disrupted by COVID. We had to close two of our classrooms due to teacher absences and posted online lessons for students that couldn’t meet in person. By January 24th, all of our classes were meeting in -person, spending most of the day outside, wearing their masks and lots of warm clothes! At this point, we are used to adjusting and readjusting our class rosters and bus route. We don’t think about what’s “normal” anymore – we just figure out how to connect with as many students as possible! Tutoring There are currently almost thirty pairs of school-aged students and tutors meeting once/week on-line. We use an online literacy curriculum called Reading A-Z. Each pair meets on a day and time convenient for both – after we have assembled the giant puzzle of their preferences! Online tutoring has proven to be a boon for our students, and is a lot easier now that they are attending school in person. Our families continue to bear the brunt of the virus, as some of them have not returned to full-time work. Porch Durham has been a fabulous partner for us, delivering fresh fruit and vegetables, canned goods and grocery shopping cards once a month.
