Update from the Vestry Please check your email inbox on Saturday for a “Message from the Vestry”. It will include Frequently Asked Questions and their answers regarding St. Luke’s Rector Transition. Every Member Canvas Update: Belong to the Lord This year, our EMC theme is “Belong to the Lord”. We all belong to the Lord our God: all of our gifts, losses, joys, treasures – everything is the Lord’s. As the scripture says, “The earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants, belong to the Lord” (Psalm 24:1). Thank you for supporting the EMC campaign this fall as we make plans for our 2022 St Luke’s budget. Remember, Ingathering Sunday is November 7th; please return your pledge cards or email/call Kathy with your pledge before the 7th! Solar Project UpdateSolar Energy Management started installing solar panels on Johnson Hall the week of September 26. That installation is complete and is being tested. Installation of panels on the flat roof above the Sprague Room should be starting soon. Nominations for Vestry Election We have not yet met our goal to have a slate with six candidates. At this time of transition we still need a few more people to volunteer to run for Election to the Vestry for a 3-year term. Qualifications: Enrolled communicant member in good standing 16 years of age or older. If you are willing to serve, please give your name to a member of the Nominations Committee: Amy Kiser, Bill Yarger, Kelley Lawton, Steve Dedrick or the Sr Warden, Eileen Morgan. Dismantling Racism Retreat for Youth The new and improved Dismantling Racism curriculum for youth is back with a weekend retreat this November. The new training will be for teams of at least two (or more) youth per parish, along with an adult (who does not have to be the youth minister). Participants will be trained in the curriculum and sent forth to hold Racial Justice trainings in their parishes. We ask that the youth and adult hold at least one training event per year in their parish. The training will cover:the history of racism, analysis of concepts of racial identity, bias, privilege and prejudice, learning how to engage in difficult conversations, andreflecting on ways to bring this training into our lives and to our parish youth. The retreat takes place November 5-7 at Haw River State Park. The trainings costs $125 per participant and will cover housing, food and all materials. Training materials will be provided for each team to take back to their parish. Register (by Nov. 1) Are you an adult interested in dismatling racism? The next session of “Dismantling Racism: Reclaiming our Baptismal Promise” is taking place via Zoom on November 12 (5-8 p.m.) and November 13 (9 a.m. – 1p.m.). Register. ECW Annual Meeting November 5, 70- p.m. The 2021 ECW Annual Meeting features a theme of social justice. The Rt. Rev. CONGREGATIONAL SINGING In light of the fact that, over the last three months with Diocesan COVID protocols and congregational singing implemented in many churches in the diocese, there has been no evidence of transmission of COVID, the Vestry decided to authorize congregational singing for St. Luke’s. We feel confident that, as we continue to care for each other by wearing masks, sanitizing our hands and practicing social distancing, we can add singing to our worship and still keep each other safe. Since we have only one indoor worship service at this time, we will only be singing a Processional and Recessional hymn with the rest of the liturgy in the spoken word. We want to honor both those for whom the spoken liturgy without music is spiritually nurturing and those for whom added music is spiritually nurturing. May God continue to bless us as we gather together in worship. DONATIONS HONORING HELEN SVOBODA-BARBER If you would like to make a donation in Helen’s honor, the money will be placed in the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. This fund has been used as part of St. Luke’s commitment to outreach since the money has gone to people in need who are experiencing a financial emergency. Unless you specify otherwise, our Parish Administrator will share with Helen the names of those who have donated in her honor but not the amount given. At the end of the year, we will let Helen know how much in total was donated in her honor for the benefit of those in need through the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. On checks, please make a note: “in Helen’s Honor”. If you donate via ACS or auto payments through your bank, send an email or call the Parish Administrator to inform her of your intent for this specific donation. At Bishop Rodman’s direction, the Vestry has appointed a person to administer the Rector’s Discretionary Fund until such time that we have an Interim Rector. This allows us to continue this important outreach ministry during our transition. PECANS FOR BELIZE 2021St. Luke’s is once again selling delicious South Georgia pecans to raise money for Holy Cross Anglican School in Belize. We’re selling pecans in two varieties: Plain and Dark Chocolate Covered, both for $11.00 for a one-pound bag. All pecans are fresh from this year’s crop. The deadline for placing your order and making your payment to St. Luke’s is November 1. To order, either fill out and return this pdf order form to St. Luke’s (1737 Hillandale Road, Durham NC 27705) or order online at https://forms.gle/7WgxCvHBh3yy9REg6. This year, however, we will be directing the funds to support for Leticia, the Holy Cross graduate we’ve been supporting through San Pedro High School on Ambergris Caye. We have one more year to support Leticia, leading up to her graduation from SPHS in June of 2023.Pecans will be available for pickup a few days before Thanksgiving.
