VESTRY TRANSITION UPDATE The Vestry and Diocesan staff are continuing to work on additional communications and the plans for our pastoral transition. The Sr Warden is in frequent contact with Diocesan staff for guidance and support during this transition. CONGREGATIONAL SINGING In light of the fact that, over the last three months with Diocesan COVID protocols and congregational singing implemented in many churches in the diocese, there has been no evidence of transmission of COVID, the Vestry decided to authorize congregational singing for St. Luke’s. We feel confident that, as we continue to care for each other by wearing masks, sanitizing our hands and practicing social distancing, we can add singing to our worship and still keep each other safe. Since we have only one indoor worship service at this time, we will only be singing a Processional and Recessional hymn with the rest of the liturgy in the spoken word. We want to honor both those for whom the spoken liturgy without music is spiritually nurturing and those for whom added music is spiritually nurturing. May God continue to bless us as we gather together in worship. DONATIONS HONORING HELEN SVOBODA-BARBER If you would like to make a donation in Helen’s honor, the money will be placed in the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. This fund has been used as part of St. Luke’s commitment to outreach since the money has gone to people in need who are experiencing a financial emergency. Unless you specify otherwise, our Parish Administrator will share with Helen the names of those who have donated in her honor but not the amount given. At the end of the year, we will let Helen know how much in total was donated in her honor for the benefit of those in need through the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. On checks, please make a note: “in Helen’s Honor”. If you donate via ACS or auto payments through your bank, send an email or call the Parish Administrator to inform her of your intent for this specific donation. At Bishop Rodman’s direction, the Vestry has appointed a person to administer the Rector’s Discretionary Fund until such time that we have an Interim Rector. This allows us to continue this important outreach ministry during our transition. YOUTH GROUP BACK IN-PERSON! Starting this Sunday, Sept 26th 10:30-11:30am. Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to gather in the youth room (Gray Building). Wear your mask and dress to get messy, we will be creating some artwork to add to the room. Questions contact Laura Thornton. PECANS FOR BELIZE 2021St. Luke’s is once again selling delicious South Georgia pecans to raise money for Holy Cross Anglican School in Belize. We’re selling pecans in two varieties: Plain and Dark Chocolate Covered, both for $11.00 for a one-pound bag. All pecans are fresh from this year’s crop. The deadline for placing your order and making your payment to St. Luke’s is November 1. To order, either fill out and return this pdf order form to St. Luke’s (1737 Hillandale Road, Durham NC 27705) or order online at https://forms.gle/7WgxCvHBh3yy9REg6. There are also two ways to pay:· Mail a check to St. Luke’s with “BELIZE PECANS” on the memo line.· Pay through ACS, specifying “Belize Pecans” as the fund. Historically, our pecan proceeds have supported the Holy Cross feeding program. This year, however, we will be directing the funds to support for Leticia, the Holy Cross graduate we’ve been supporting through San Pedro High School on Ambergris Caye. We have one more year to support Leticia, leading up to her graduation from SPHS in June of 2023. Pecans will be available for pickup a few days before Thanksgiving. You’ll be contacted at that time with details on how we’ll be handling pickup. As always, thanks for your support. |

Full Articles LEAP is Happening! LEAP has launched into another year of school – a year that is already proving to be tumultuous and full of potential! We have over sixty children attending our two preschools (Nuestra Escuelita, located at St. Luke’s) and the DCI/LEAP Academy. Thanks to new foundation funding, we’ve been able to add a mixed age classroom at Nuestra Escuelita this year. Our classrooms are situated outside under tents and trees – where it’s safest and there are endless opportunities for learning. Imagine lots of kids, some crying, some speaking Spanish, others cooperating to build sandcastles. That’s what it’s like at school this week! Although we had hoped to have in-person tutoring this fall, we’re starting the year remotely via zoom. The advantage of this mode is that the time and day are flexible. Our Tutoring Coordinator, an experienced literacy instructor, trains and supports our tutors, and our online curriculum leads tutors to games and reading exercises designed for their student’s reading level. No experience or Spanish is required. To volunteer to be a tutor, please visit https://tinyurl.com/tedd2szs. Fall is the perfect time to link your Harris Teeter VIC card with LEAP, naming us as the school you’d like to support- for free! You can link your card online (https://www.harristeeter.com/together-in-education) or at the service counter (ask them to link you with LEAP, Nuestra Escuelita or #2840). Every time you buy a HT product this school year, they will send us a donation. (If you’ve linked with us before, that link has expired; you have to re-up each fall.) Thank you for keeping LEAP in your prayers. To keep up, please follow us on social media (durhamleap). |
