ST LUKES WALKS Because of people’s travel plans, the Pumpkin Patch, and other stuff, our hike date has been changed to Saturday, October 9th. PRIDE EUCHARIST & PARADE Join local Episcopalians for an outdoor, masked Pride Eucharist at 10am on Sat Sept 25th at St. Joseph’s (1902 W Main). Please bring your own chair. If you’re LGBTQIA+ and would like to help with the service or planning, please contact Kirk Royal. If you would like to march with the Episcopal group, we will line up behind an Episcopal banner at 11am on Duke East Campus (parade begins at noon). Parish banners are encouraged! HANDBELL CHOIR FORMING Do you like to ring handbells? We are starting a handbell choir at St. Luke’s in September and still need a couple more ringers. We will be rehearsing weekly on Wednesday evenings and playing on some Sunday mornings. If you read music, are familiar with handbells, and would like to join us, contact Kaye Saunders. FLING POSTPONED After much consideration for the health of our St. Luke’s volunteers and the Durham community at large, the Spring Fling (Fall Fling) committee is postponing the Fall Fling until Spring 2022. Due to the fact that the Fling is held primarily indoors and the numbers of COVID positivity in Durham is continuing to climb, we will now put all our volunteer energy into supporting the Pumpkin Patch (held entirely outside with plenty of distancing!). Don’t forget to sign up either online or at church to help with the Patch, and we will see you at the Spring Fling in 2022. Spring Fling Co-Chairs, Joan Hodges and Lisa D’Amico GO PLAY SAVE COUPON BOOKS St Luker’s the GoPlaySave coupon books have arrived! Full Articles LEAP is Happening!LEAP has launched into another year of school – a year that is already proving to be tumultuous and full of potential! We have over sixty children attending our two preschools (Nuestra Escuelita, located at St. Luke’s) and the DCI/LEAP Academy. Thanks to new foundation funding, we’ve been able to add a mixed age classroom at Nuestra Escuelita this year. Our classrooms are situated outside under tents and trees – where it’s safest and there are endless opportunities for learning. Imagine lots of kids, some crying, some speaking Spanish, others cooperating to build sandcastles. That’s what it’s like at school this week! Although we had hoped to have in-person tutoring this fall, we’re starting the year remotely via zoom. The advantage of this mode is that the time and day are flexible. Our Tutoring Coordinator, an experienced literacy instructor, trains and supports our tutors, and our online curriculum leads tutors to games and reading exercises designed for their student’s reading level. No experience or Spanish is required. To volunteer to be a tutor, please visit https://tinyurl.com/tedd2szs.Fall is the perfect time to link your Harris Teeter VIC card with LEAP, naming us as the school you’d like to support- for free! You can link your card online (https://www.harristeeter.com/together-in-education) or at the service counter (ask them to link you with LEAP, Nuestra Escuelita or #2840). Every time you buy a HT product this school year, they will send us a donation. (If you’ve linked with us before, that link has expired; you have to re-up each fall.)Thank you for keeping LEAP in your prayers. To keep up, please follow us on social media (durhamleap). |
